Christmas Week Morning

Part 1. From the Divine Office

O Lord, open my lips.
And my mouth shall proclaim Your praise.

O God, come to my assistance,
O Lord, make haste to my help me.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.

Acclamations For Reflection

Celebrating the prophecies of our Messiah’s coming, His birth, and His return at the end of time.

  • This day, true peace has come down to us from heaven; This day the heavens drip honey upon the entire world.
  • This day brought the dawn of a new redemption, of the deliverance announced long ago, of eternal happiness.
  • Whom have you seen, O shepherds? Speak, tell us, who has appeared on earth? A child we saw, and choirs of angels praising the Lord.

From Psalm 10

Prayer for Confidence

In the Lord I take refuge, how can you say to me: “Fly away like a bird to the mountain!

For, see the wicked bend the bow, they fit their arrow to the string, to shoot in the dark at the upright of heart.

When the foundations are overthrown, what can the just man do?”

The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven. His eyes see, his glances test the children of men.

The Lord tries the just and the wicked; he hates the lover of evil.

He will pour down burning coals and brimstone upon the wicked; the scorching win shall be the portion of their cup.

For the Lord is just, he loves justice; the upright shall behold his face.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is, was and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Reading — St. John 10: 11 — 16

At that time, Jesus said to the Pharisees, “I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for His sheep. But the hireling, who is not a shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees. And the wolf snatches and scatters the sheep; but the hireling flees because he is a hireling, and has no concern for the sheep. I am the Good Shepherd, and I know Mine and Mine know Me, even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for My sheep. And other sheep I have that are not of this fold. Them also I must bring, and they shall hear My voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd”.

Hymn as a Prayer

God, the portion, crown and prize of Your soldiers, we are singing a Martyr’s praises; free us from the bondage of sin.

Your Martyr reckoned the pleasures of the world and its attractive enticements to sin to be as joyless and bitter as gall and so won through to the joys of heaven,

He passed through his tortures bravely and endured them manfully. He shed his blood for You and so obtained his eternal reward.

For this reason we turn to You in humble prayer, most loving Lord; forgive Your servants’ sins on this day of Your Martyr’s triumph.

Let praise and lasting glory be to the Father and the Son, together with the Holy Paraclete, for endless ages. Amen.

V. The voice of one crying in thedesert: Make ready the way of the Lord.

R. Make straight His paths.

Zackary’s Hymn of Praise — St. Luke 1: 68 — 79

St. Luke records (Luke 1: 67) that the father of John the Baptist, eight days after the birth of his son, “filled with the Holy Spirit”, uttered this prophecy, which has remained a daily prayer for Christians.

He who hates his life in this world, keeps it unto life everlasting.

Blessed be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has visited and wrought redemption for his people,

And has raised up a horn # of salvation for us in the house of David his servant,

As he promised through the mouths of his holy ones the prophets from of old;

Salvation from our enemies and from the hands of all our foes

He has fulfilled his kindness to all our fathers and been mindful of his holy covenant

In the Oath to Abraham our father, by which he swore to grant us

That, delivered from the hands of our enemies, we should serve him without fear.

In holiness and justice before him all our days. —

And you, O child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,

To give his people knowledge of salvation through forgiveness of their sins,

Because of the compassionate kindness of our God with which the Orient from on high will visit us,

To shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end.

# “Horn of salvation.”

Horn refers originally to the power of an ox. It came to be applied to people and here, to the royal saving power of the messiah.

He who hates his life in this world, keeps it unto life everlasting.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.

Our Father, in heaven,
Hallowed be Your Name,
Your Kingdom come,
Your will be done,
On earth as in heaven,
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.

O God, for the sake of Whose Church the glorious Bishop Thomas fell by the sword of wicked men, grant, we implore You that all who request his aid, may obtain the good fruit of their petition. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end. Amen.

V. Our help is in the Name of the Lord.

R. Who made heaven and earth.

May the all powerful and merciful
Lord, Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
bless and preserve us.
