O Lord, make haste to my help me.

Acclamations For Reflection

Celebrating the prophecies of our Messiah’s coming, His birth, and His return at the end of time.

  • Begotten before the daystar and before the ages, the Lord, our Saviour has appeared this day to the world.

  • Your light has come Jerusalem, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you, and the nations shall walk by your light, Halleluia.

  • Seas and rivers, bless the Lord, sing a hymn to the Lord, you springs, Halleluia.

  • Opening their treasures the Magi offered the Lord, gold, frankincense and myrrh, Halleluia.

  • Like a flame of fire that star pointed out God, the King of kings; the Magi saw it and offered gifts to the great King.

From Psalm 85 [86]

God’s Providence in History

Give thanks to the Lord, proclaim his name, make known his deeds among the nations.

Sing to him, make melody to him, relate all his wondrous deeds.

Glory to his holy name; let the heart of those who seek the Lord rejoice.

Consider the Lord and his power, seek his face continually.

Remember the marvelous deeds he has done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth, race of Abraham, his servant, children of Jacob, his elect!

He the Lord is our God; his judgments prevail throughout the world.

He remembers his covenant forever, the promise he made for a thousand generations, the covenant he made with Abraham, and the Oath he gave to Issac, which he established as a statute for Jacob, and an everlasting covenant for Israel, saying: To you will I give the land of Canaan as your allotted inheritance.

When they were few in number, very few and strangers in that land, when they wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people, he permitted no-one to oppress them, and for their sake he rebuked kings: “Touch not my anointed ones, and do my prophets no harm.”

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Reading — Isaiah 60: 1 — 6

True Faith Will Shine Forth in the Church of Christ

Arise, be enlightened, O Jerusalem: for your light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold darkness shall cover the earth, and a mist the people: but the Lord shall arise upon you, and his glory shall be seen upon you. And the Gentiles shall walk in your light, and kings in the brightness of your rising. Lift up your eyes round about and see: all these are gathered together, they shall come to you: your sons shall come from afar and your daughters shall rise up at your side. Then shall you see and abound, and your heart shall wonder and be enlarged, when the multitude of the sea shall be converted to you, the strength of the Gentiles shall come to you. The multitude of camels shall cover you, the dromedaries of Midian and Epha: all they from Saba shall come, bringing gold and frankincense: and showing forth praise to the Lord.

Hymn as a Prayer

Why, merciless Herod, are you afraid of God coming as king? The giver of heaven’s kingdom does not usurp earthly ones.

The Magi went on their way, following the lead of the star they had seen.

By its light they go in search of the Light and their gift of incense owns him to be God.

The Lamb from heaven touched the Jordan’s cleansing waters and, washing us, took away sins that were not His.

A new kind of miracle. The water jars redden, for the water, bidden to come out as wine, changed its nature.

Glory be to You Jesus, who showed Yourself to the nations; and glory be to the Father and the loving Spirit, through endless ages. Amen.

V. Tomorrow the iniquity of the earth shall be blotted out.

R. And the Saviour of the world shall rule over us.

Mary’s Hymn of Praise — St. Luke 1: 46 — 55

Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist (Luke 1: 41 — 45), acclaimed Mary, warmly with the words: “Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb” — to which Mary replied in her prophetic hymn.

Antiphon

The holy day we are keeping is adorned with three mysteries: this day a star led the Magi to the manger; this day wine was made from water at the wedding; this day at the Jordan Christ willed to be baptised in order to save us, Halleluia.

My soul magnifies the Lord.

And my spirit rejoices in God my saviour.

Because he has regarded the lowliness of his handmaid, for behold; henceforth all generations shall call me blessed,

Because he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

And His mercy is from generation to generation toward those who fear him.

He has shown might with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.

He has put down the mighty from their thrones and has exalted the lowly.

The hungry he has filled with good things and the rich he has sent empty away.

He has given help to Israel his servant, mindful of his mercy.

(As he promised our fathers) towards Abraham and his descendants forever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
